Literary Nonfiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. Women's Studies. GOOD GIRLS MARRY DOCTORS is the first anthology that examines "tiger parenting" from the perspective of the daughter. GOOD GIRLS MARRY DOCTORS: SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN DAUGHTERS ON OBEDIENCE AND REBELLION, edited by Piyali Bhattacharya, is the first anthology to examine the multiple facets of daughterhood in South Asian American families. The voices in this volume reveal how a Good Girl is trained to seamlessly blend professional success with the maintenance and reproduction of her family's cultural heritage. Her gratitude for her immigrant parents' sacrifices creates intense pressure to perform and embody the role of the "perfect daughter." Yet, the demand for such perfection can stifle desire, curb curiosity, and make it fraught for a Good Girl to construct her own identity in the face of stern parental opinion. Of course, this is not always the case. Certain stories in this collection uncover relationships between parents and daughters that are open and supportive while also being exacting. Many of the essays, however, dig into difficult truths about what it is to be a young woman in a world of overbearing cultural expectation. GOOD GIRLS MARRY DOCTORS is filled with honest stories, difficult and joyous, heartbreaking and hilarious, from a diverse array of powerful women. These narratives combine to expose struggles that are too often hidden from the public eye, while reminding those going through similar experiences that they are heard, and they are not alone. When I read the Foreword and Introduction, my thought was, "YES! This!" Battacharya does an incredible job summarizing what it means to be a Good Girl as a South Asian Woman. I moved into each of the stories. I couldn't quite relate to the first few stories in the book, but about a third of the way though the stories, I thought they became stronger and more relatable. There are some sweet and light hearted stories, there are also other stories that are difficult to read because of the content. The stories vary from a writer's mother being more rebellious than the writer could have ever imagined, to physical and emotional abuse. The women detail a small snippet of their lives, giving insight into their struggles of reconciling being both South Asian and North American, and how they navigated both worlds. This book is so important. It's important for everyone to read. From South Asian adolescents to adults. This book told me that I am not alone, and I believe that was part of Battacharya's goal when she envisioned this anthology - that the stories of South Asian Women need to be shared because so many of us share similar experiences, but we never talk about them. This book is important for South Asian parents to read, for an insight into how the first generation (and beyond) thinks and feels and the difficulties in navigating two (or more) cultures. It is important for non-South Asians to read for an insight and understanding to their South Asian counter parts' lives. It is difficult to explain, but these stories nail the varied experiences.I wish I could have read this 15 years ago, as a teenager, to know that many others had the same struggle I did. I continue to struggle, but I am not alone.
Perhaps, as King Solomon said, there is a time for everything under the sun. I picked up this book at a time when I was broken, struggling to see past my grief, wondering at my own immigrant diaspora, trying to find my identity. You see, my father traveled back to the land where we were all born in 2014 to bury my mother and in 2016, he died there. I got a call halfway across the world, just shortly after he passed away from a heart attack. I am like the women here, writers, rebels, feminists, and as I read each essay, they speak to me across the space and time of their experience. Reading this collection of essays revealed a side of South Asian American women that are rarely seen. These writers are women of courage who have forged a path for themselves for better or worse and their struggle to find their voice, happiness in themselves, I imagine would give voice to countless women like myself. We all had mothers but our mothers never spoke as these, neither did our sisters, aunts, and cousins. They become, through their essays, our confidants, the validators of our humble hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Their message is clear, though the road is uneven full of obstacles, we are not alone; they have walked this journey ahead of us, and we too will make it through. If I could, I would love to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the writers. I needed their writing just at the right time in my life. I feel as if a veil has fallen from my eyes and I can finally see the woman in the mirror for who she really is, an immigrant, definitely not a good girl, a feminist and she's perfectly content with it all. I didn't expect this book to change my life and empower me the way it did. I really loved this book.
I am so glad this book exists. If I had come across this book when I was younger, 12 or 13, it would have completely changed my life. Many of my brown friends have spoken about feeling alone in our rebellions, be it sex, drugs, alcohol, or career choices. We felt that we were the only brown girls to ever rebel against their parents, and that all of our friends are "good girls." But this friction against what is expected and what is desired exists in almost every young South Asian women, and it was incredibly refreshing to see these feelings aired. Sisterhood - that's what I found in this beautiful volume of essays.
This book has been invaluable to my understanding of my own gender and ethnic identity development growing up as an immigrant kid in the US. I enjoyed the essays so much I buy multiple copies of the anthology and give them to my South Asian friends as birthday and graduation gifts. Patti Smith in the Dark was my favorite essay :) queer femme essays are the revolution. Can't wait for more of the same!
Don't have words for AMAZING this book is. Makes you feel all different kind of ways and soo relatable for all the south Asian American women (Actually any women) living in this time and age. Love it and definitely recommend it. Great choice
This book was phenomenal! Within the first 20 pages I found myself laughing and crying along with the all too familiar struggles and anecdotes the writers described. I'm counting this anthology of essays as a must-read for all my badass friends (men and women, south asians and people everywhere) who have ever felt the need to disobey.
A must read for all South Asian Women... theses stories are so well written and so well organized. It slowly opens you to al the horrors that women face in our culture with or without the added trauma of immigration. It gives you strength that happiness is possible and is more real than the very constricted definition of happiness for women in Indian society. Kudos to all women who endured and finding their voice and place in this world
This book is everything. It's so rare to find a book that speaks to my experiences as a South Asian woman in America. The book has a diverse collection of stories and each of the authors share their voice in such a beautiful way. I bought it as gifts for my sister and cousins!
