As an introduction to Islam book I would say this is not one of those. The author does offer many helpful insights into the heart and soul of Islam through stories of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and the Hadith traditions but overall I kind of felt like this book was more of a self help book using Islam as the healing mechanism.Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and appreciate a different take on explaining Islam to others then just the typical "what everyone needs to know," but it could have been more wide ranging in topics. Over all I give this book 4/5 stars and I would recommend it. I'm just saying that if your looking for a book solely about Islamic beliefs this is not it.
I just purchased my Kindle copy and audiobook - just finished listening to chapter 1; I intend to come back and update this review as I finish, in shaa Allah (God-willing). What I can say so far is that I wish I had received as elegant a framework of understanding as what Mamoon offers in this work when I converted to Islam almost 20 years ago. I think his work will benefit so many - including Muslims! And I'm saying this even though I've just started. This is a book I already intend to share with my children, in shaa Allah.
Wonderful, insightful, sincere and really needed. Mamoon is a great thinker, a sincere spirit, and a delightful soul. He presents Islam eloquently and genuinely..and addresses the prevalent mainstream thinking which is misinformed about Islam. What he shares and the lens through which he presents it is unique and progressive. Recommended for non-Muslims and Muslims.

Great book!! And it came sooner than expected
This is an extremely difficult book to review for several reasons. It is well written, conversational (for the most part) and the author is quite likeable thanks in large part to the extensive psychological/self-help style and prior affiliation. The author is quite open about both his beliefs and personal proclivity toward motivational speakers and self styled guru types...an affiliation that both helps and hurts this book. His youth and lack of grounding become evident quite early but are tempered by his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn...still, I suspect that more scholarly or religiously inclined authorities within Islam itself would take issue with many of the interpretations both large and small. Herein is the issue - the author has taken a populist perspective of religious zeal, turned it into a self-help manifesto for the masses and added a solid dose of artistic interpretation (ie, the Soul of Islam vs the law, the doctrine etc). It is indeed a unique view but likely to only appeal to those outside of the faith itself.

I was amazed at what I had heard in the reactionary Internet voices about what the Quran teaches versus reality. As I learned about the Quran, it became obvious just how badly terrorists interpret the Quran. I was admittedly a bit embarrassed about the things I believed to be true before reading this book. This book is indeed a spiritual journey that can be used by all religions without becoming a Muslim. I learned the real role of women and why they wear what they wear and the respect they are afforded where Islam is practiced faithfully. I learned the rules of jihad and discovered that they are quite different from what terrorists practice. I learned how ridiculous the notion is of dipping bullets in pig's blood was (just one of many mainstream absurdities we are taught in American culture). Most importantly, I learned what the Quran actually teaches as opposed to what I had heard in talk shows and Facebook posts. This book is a great start to a more peaceful world. I felt like it could bring people together on common ground if only people would read it. I hope whoever reads this review will be open to what this book can do for them regardless of how negative their current view may be on the topic at present. It is very worth it.
